Full Review and Specification for the Nokia X3-02
This is part of Nokia's Touch and Type series, in which the phone manufacturer has blended its well-loved candybar shape with a touch-screen and a standard keypad. The idea if to give users who haven't quite decided whether they want a true touchphone a choice of how they control their handset. Nokia is targeting quite a niche market - and whether it is successful or just proves a bit of a gimmick boils down to how well it has managed to do it.

Looking good
The X3-02 impresses from first look, feels good in the hand and is very light - a mere 77.4g in fact. The phone is made mostly from high-quality plastic that doesn't seem prone to fingerprint marks - except for the glossy screen, which isn't unusual.

Turn it over, however, and you'll find a steel battery cover, which is held firmly in place by a latch on each side. Under the cover you'll find a Li-ion battery with 860 mAh capacity - this means you'll get three days usage out of a full battery charge.

Back to basics
A first glance at the physical keypad may be rather deceiving, because there are three rows of alphanumeric keys and the fourth row is in actual fact in a column on the right-hand side. The keys are a very decent size and give excellent tactile feedback - although the tiny space between them means that it is easy to press the wrong key. On the top row sit dedicated music player and messaging buttons - it's a shame you can't set them for anything other than their default functions.

The lack of a D-pad is another deviation from the familiar format. Instead, to find your way around menus and confirm actions, you have to use the 2.4in touch-screen, which we found quite surprisingly sensitive. If you're trying to view the display in direct sunlight, you'll notice a lot of the colours fade away, but any on-screen info stays easy to read because of the big system fonts. It's not perfect, but is decent enough for a budget priced phone. We also thought the five megapixel snapper was a bit cheap - the fixed focus camera has no LED flash so we were disappointed in most images except those taken in bright daylight.

The main features
The software platform for Nokia's feature phones - Series 40 - has been tweaked to include bigger, touch-optimised icons and other elements designed to make working on a smaller touch-display easier. The screen's resolution is a tad low at 240x320, which is particularly apparent on a web browser. On the bright side, the WebKit-based browser offers a good view of websites and supports kinetic scrolling too. An alternative option is the included top-notch Opera Mini browser, which has been developed to speedily render mobile websites.

If you want to access your social network sites, you'll need to use the Communities application, which is pretty basic but still works well for Facebook and Twitter. The onboard email client is also on the basic side, but nevertheless is simple to set up and supports multiple accounts.

The verdict
Easy and intuitive to use, the Nokia X3-02 proves itself an amenable, but basic handset. However, if Nokia had seen fit to include a higher resolution display and on-board GPS it would have made what is a solid effort a very solid success.
